Samsung R&D spending reached $10.6 billion in 2012


According to Yonhap news in S. Korea, Samsung Electronics invested $10.6 billion for its research and development in 2012. Samsung’s R&D spending was $9.1 billion in 2011. The amount is the largest in the company’s history, which is about 6% of Samsung’s total revenue in 2012. Samsung is also expected to continue growing R&D spending this year, especially for its world leading smartphone business.  

Through its IP-R&D strategic alignment, Samsung filed 6,166 patent applications domestically and 11,973 patent applications globally in 2012. In the US, Samsung obtained 5,081 patents and ranked the second following the top assignee IBM in number of issued patents last year. Samsung also obtained 378 design patents last year in the US. As of April 1, 2013, Samsung holds total of 102,995 patents globally, of which 30,641 patents are granted in the US.
