Title: Smartphone Wireless Patents: Issues, Strategies, and New Business Opportunities

Abstract: As represented by “Smartphone Patent Disputes,” patents for smartphone became the most important strategic competition tool among market leaders. Recent big deals for patent acquisition among smartphone incumbents are a good example to reveal such recognition of patent as important strategic tool for competition. This talk is designed to present issues, strategies, and new business opportunities regarding recent developments surrounding smartphone wireless patents. This talk will cover following topics: Review of current smartphone and related wireless technologies business ecosystem; A holistic review of current issues in smartphone patent disputes; Evolving recognition of patent’s roles: strategic v. revenue generating tool; Strategies for developing and exploiting smartphone wireless patents, new business opportunities and risks for smartphone related start-ups and incumbents under the evolving recognition of patent’s roles; and Case studies of LTE, NFC/RFID, and emerging wireless applications for smartphones.

Bio: Alex Lee is a principal of TechIPm, LLC, which is a research and consulting firm for emerging technology & intellectual property management in the field of IT & telecommunications. He is a technology and patent expert in mobile computing and wireless communications with 20 years of experiences in research, standardization, strategy, business development, and intellectual property management as a researcher, manager, executive, advisor, and professor both in the US and S. Korea. His clients include Microsoft, Samsung, Sony, Alcatel-Lucent, and Korea Telecom. He earned his Ph.D. in physics from the Johns Hopkins University. He is going to earn his J.D. from Suffolk University Law School in January, 2014. He is registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office. He is a member of IEEE, LES, and AIPLA.
