According to Nikkei News in Japan, the
Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ) announced that it will newly
form a patent acquisition fund. INCJ is a public-private partnership
established in July 2009 for promoting innovation in Japan. The initial fund
level is known to be about $0.3 billion for acquiring unused patents form
Japanese companies for resale to other countries. According to Japan Patent
Office (JPO), around 47% of 1.35 million patents owned by Japanese companies
were not exploited economically in 2012. The patents will cover mainly technologies
related to mobile devices, LCD display devices, and optical devices. The patent
acquisition fund benchmarked the government backed patent fund models in S.
Korea (Intellectual Discovery) and France (France Brevets).
