Green Wireless ICT Innovation Mining

Currently, about 3 % of the world-wide energy is consumed by the ICT infrastructure, which causes about 2 % of the worldwide CO2 emissions. According to Green Touch™ (http://www.greentouch.org/), a global consortium organized by Bell Labs to address green ecosystem in ICT industry, ICT networks could potentially be 10.000 times more efficient than they are today. Green Touch™ aims to create 1000-fold improvement in energy efficiency by transforming ICT infrastructure globally utilizing innovative technologies.

Considering the fact that energy consumption of wireless networks is growing much faster than ICT on the whole, the development of energy-efficient wireless technologies is imperative. The potential candidates are cognitive green radios, intelligent communication protocols, energy-aware networks, advanced smart antennas, and opportunistic spectrum management.

As an indicator of innovation status for green wireless technologies, patents among global market leaders are researched. To find the key IPR holders, a keyword search of the USPTO, EPO, WIPO, and JPO patent data base has been performed as of April 15, 2011.

Among the total of 155 IPR holders, Qualcomm is the leader followed by Nokia, Ericsson, Samsung Electronics, Alcatel Lucent, NTT DoCoMo, Huawei, InterDigital, LG Electronics, and Motorola.
