Fixed-Mobile Broadband Convergence: S. Korea’s 4G Migration Strategy

Following the recent shift in mobile application market from voice to data, S. Korea’s major telecom operators are changing their business platforms:

KT (Korea Telecom), which is the largest fixed telecom operator, is merged with mobile telecom operator KTF to form a new KT to get a competitive edge in the emerging fixed-mobile broadband convergence market. KT’s recent aggressive making for smart phones (Samsung’s Omnia and Apple’s iPhone) is one example of the new KT’s business strategy utilizing the new integrated networks.

As of Jan. 1 2010, LT Telecom, which is one of the major mobile telecom operators along with KT and SKT, launched a new fixed-mobile broadband convergence network operator by merging with two other LG group’s fixed line operators – LG DACOM and LG POWERCOM. In recent media interview, the new LGT’s CEO Sang-chul Lee expressed that LGT will be the first 4G broadband mobile service provider based on LTE as soon as the Korean Communication Commission’s 4G spectrum allocation (700 MHz, 800 MHz, 2.1 GHz) policy is decided.
