Biometric sensing and authentication system
such as Touch ID fingerprint scanner in iPhone 5S became one of the main
features in major flagship smartphones (There is also a rumor that Samsung
Galaxy S5 will equip with eye sensing Iris scanner). TechIPm’s patent mining research for
Intellectual Venture (IV)’s patent portfolios reveals that IV hold total of 33
patents issued in the U.S. relating to key biometric sensing technologies.
IV’s biometric sensing patents cover mostly
fingerprint sensing technology. The patent portfolio also covers Iris sensing
and face recognition technologies. IV
acquired most of patents from companies.
Only few patents were acquired from inventors and universities. Forward
citations analysis shows that the biometric scanners in major smartphones may
infringe several IV’s patents.
