Vehicular Networks Patent Landscape

Vehicular networks are vehicular-wide wireless communication networks including vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication networks. Recently, various international expert communities are developing standards for the vehicular networks: Vehicular Applications and inter-NETworking technologies (VANET), IEEE 802.11p for Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (WAVE).

To find the key IPR holders for VANET and WAVE vehicular networks patents, a keyword search of the USPTO patent data base has been performed. Total of 116 published patent applications and issued patents are identified as of March 15, 2012. The top 10 IPR holders are Toyota, GM, Mitsubishi Electric, Palo Alto Research Center, Telcordia Technologies, IBM, Kapsch Tafficcom AG, STMicroelectronics, France Telecom, Hitachi, and Norand Corporation.
